Gifted and Talented a Huge Success

KS3 students were involved in a Gifted and Talented DT, Maths and Art day on March 3rd. 12 teams with a mix of Y7 , Y8 and Y9 students, led by Y12 Team Leaders, took on the challenge of creating 'The Perfect Learning Environment'.

They presented their work as a portfolio or as a Powerpoint. The main focus of the day was to develop their reflective and independent learning skills whilst at the same time having to work as a team, show good communication skills and organisation.

The work was creative and imaginative and 'cutting edge' with the students choosing many resources which showed futuristic technology. An Awards ceremony was held on the Friday evening to showcase the work , with students presenting to parents and staff on their decision making for their learning environment.

The winning team of Eve Radford, Jamie Griffiths, Charlotte Moore, Harry Jones, Oliver Peake and Katie Machale will be involved in the process of creating a new 'innovation zone' in the school.

Careers Fair 2009

On the evening of Tuesday 3rd November 2009 the Streetly School held a very successful Careers Fair for years 10, 11, 12 and 13 students. There were 30 exhibitors promoting an extremely wide and varied range of post 16 possibilities.

The high number of parents and students who attended was very pleasing and their comments, together with those of the exhibitors, have been most complimentary.

Plans for the Careers Fair next year, on 3rd November 2010, are already being formulated.

During our four days there, we scaled the Eiffel Tower, did a town trail in Montmatre, went on a stunning evening cruise down the Seine, had a fun day in Disney Land and much, much more!

The weather was beautiful and a good time was had by all!

We are absolutely delighted with the GCSE results of our students yet again this year, who have achieved our best ever results.

Over 74% of students gained 5 or more GCSE’s at grade C or above with an outstanding 64% of students gaining 5 or more GCSE’s at grade C or above including English and Maths; this is an 8% improvement upon last year.

We have a number of students who achieved exceptionally well gaining 8 A* grades.  In fact the number of A and A* grades have doubled this year, with 20% of all results being of this exceptional level.

Well done to all our students and staff for their hard work and excellent achievements.

'A' Level Results 2009

"We are celebrating excellent A Level results, which have risen again this year.

All our students achieved at least one A Level pass, with 94% passing two or more A Levels.  An outstanding 34% of our grades achieved were higher grades (A's and B's).

Warmest congratulations to all our students and their teachers for their excellent achievements."

Gifted and Talented

Seven year 10 G&T pupils went to a 3 hour French Masterclass at Wolverhampton University on Monday 6th July 2009.

The Speaker spoke mainly in French and students were expected to use solely French to respond, create and present. They produced an advertisement campaign and a menu for a new French restaurant in London. They worked in groups to develop teamwork skills. They then presented their launch to their peers helping further their French presentation skills. Students really enjoyed being out of school and got the taste of university life.

Gifted and Talented Forensic Visit

On Tuesday 19th May a group of Gifted and Talented year 8 pupils visited the University of Wolverhampton to participate in "A day in the life of a forensic scientist" workshop.

The day included a range of activities including fingerprinting, Ballistics and anthropology. The pupils even got to check out the crime scene investigation suite!

Overall it was a really exciting day for both pupils and teachers Miss Fox and Mr Murdoch.

Whole School Dragons Den!

On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th the whole of Year 9 were involved with a Dragon’s Den activity. The event, which was run in conjunction with Walsall Enterprise and Business Partnership, was based around pupils use their enterprise skills in a practical business setting. This is a feature of pupil development which is important to the long term success of young people in business; without an ability to think and act in a way which solves problems and thinks creatively, pupils will not end up landing those top jobs which we all crave!

The day involved many activities including quizzes, challenges and thinking about their future responsibilities. Pupils had to devise creative business products and brainstorm how they would get this product to market. However, for pupils to be able to prepare for the world of work they had to be put on the spot by presenting their ideas to guest judges in true Dragon’s Den style.

The ideas of our pupils were interesting to say the least. For just a few examples one group of pupils devised Fridges with a built in I-pod called the I-Phridge where as others devised the ideas of a design of glasses with an opportunity to accessorise. Worryingly Mr Ford seemed quite keen to trial the latter idea…

The pupils seemed to enjoy the day and showed great creativity and presenting skills, so maybe their futures do look bright!

Dragons Den Triumph for Streetly

Last week Year 8 pupils Tom Roberts and Josh Watson got through to the final of the enterprise competition "Entrepreneur of the Year" run by Walsall EBP. The pupis were competing against all ages including Year 12 pupils from neighbouring schools... and won!

The idea of the competition was to pitch a business idea to the appointed judges, not too dissimilar to the popular TV show "Dragons Den".

One judge was Martin Rennison from Walsall College said, "It was one of the best peices of work I've seen in a long time, it was a highlight of the year to see their work".

Well done to Tom and Josh!

High School Musical Production

The cheer leaders cheered, the basket balls bounced and the audience gave standing ovations at The Streetly School's production of "High School Musical." The three nights of performances were played to full capacity audiences who were very impressed by the professionalism of the production and the enthusiasm and talent of all the students involved. Drama teacher Miss N Chohan said ".

I'm so proud of all the students who gave up so much time and the teamwork of staff and students in creating this fantastic show." Everyone left with a smile on their face and one question in their mind, "What's next?”

Christian Aid Week at The Streetly School

As part of our fundraising at The Streetly School this week 8AN have been thinking about how they can raise money for Christian Aid Week.  They have made posters to highlight to other students the good work carried out by Christian Aid. To raise money they are having a cake sale on Friday and a guess how many sweets are in the jar. Some of them have made ribbons and rosettes to sell during form time.

Thes tudents are taking a Giant Teddy Bear to classes and asking students to guess its name.  The student who gets the correct answer will win a box of heroes.

After a gruelling and highly competitive event the girls were awarded the Bronze medal in the Duets Event.

This is the first time the school has had National recognition in this swimming discipline, but with the girls already part of the National Development Squad it is hoped it will not be the last time.

Well done to both girls.

Year 9 Impress With Their Dazzling Wigwams!

Year 9 have been working long and hard over the last couple of days to create their own take on the traditional wigwam.

Well - what's a wigwam?

A wigwam or wickiup is a domed single-room dwelling used by certain Native American tribes. The term wickiup is generally used to label these kinds of dwellings in American Southwest and West. Wigwam is usually applied to these structures in the American Northeast.

Our pupils made these six foot high sculptures using purely recycled materials. The two day event was aimed to raise awareness of visual art and green issues combined.

Also joining us on our green mission was Aldridge and Shire Oak School. There is also talk of our students using their work as part of their GCSE work next year. Good luck to them!

Oh, and did we mention Sarah Arrowsmith was featured (and pictured) in the Express & Star? Dig out the 14th of April edition if you can!

If you want a take a look at pictures throughout the whole constructive process, click here to go to the gallery page where there's over 100 images!
