The courses we follow...
At Key Stage 4...
GCSE Business Studies:
This course is divided into 2 main sections:
- The core which covers the main parts involved in running a business of any size. Topics studied in the core are as follows:
1. External Environment- Why businesses exist
2. Business Organisation - eg sole traders, Public Limited Companies
3. Marketing - Price, place, promotion and product
4. Finance - Profit/Loss account, balance sheet and cashflow
5. Production - Methods of making goods and different costs
6. People in Business - Motivating workers, training, recruitment and selection
7. Aiding and controlling Business - Consumer Laws, government grants
- The option which looks at the following topics:
1. Marketing
2. Business communications
3. E-commerce
Each of the above parts are examined at the end of Y11. The students will be entered for either the Higher (A*-D) or Foundation (C-G) papers. Instead of coursework the students will be given a seen Case Study which can will be studied in class and then examined.
At Key Stage 5...
AS/A level Business Studies:
The students cover the following topics in Y12:
• Business Objectives and Environment,
• Business Decisions
• Business Behaviour
Business Decisions is examined through an unseen paper, whereas Business Objectives and Behaviour are examined through a seen Case Study.
In Y13 the students complete the following topics:
• Business Project
• Further People
• Business Strategy
Further people is examined with an unseen paper and Business Strategy by Case Study. The project in an individual study of a real life business problem.
AS/A level Economics:
The students cover 3 topics in Y12 all are examined in unseen papers. Topics studied are as follows:
• The Market system
• Market Failure and Government Intervention
• The national and International economy
In Y13 the students study 2 specific areas:
• Economics of Development
• Work and Leisure
The final unit in Y13 concerns Economics in a European Context and is examined through a Case Study. The paper is also synoptic and therefore covers the work from Y12.
Business BTec
This is a vocational qualification worth 2 GCSE’s grade C or above. Attainment can range between a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
This course is 100% coursework and is new to the curriculum offered here at Streetly.
The Coursework is divided into the three following units that will be completed over Years 10 and 11:
- Exploring Business Purposes
- Developing Customer Relations
- Starting a Small Business
For AS/A level Business could the units be changed to:

A selection of one of the following Units; Marketing, Accounting, People in organisations and Business Production.
Strategic Management
For AS/A Economics could the units be changed to:

Markets in Action
The National and International Economy
A2
A selection of 2 of the following 3 units:
Economics of Work and Leisure
Transport Economics
The Global Economy
