Welcome to the History department page!

The Streetly School History Department believes that:
- Students should find History enjoyable and intriguing
- Students should understand the methodology of History and how the skills and concepts developed in History can enhance their understanding of the world about them
- Students should possess a number of key thematic stories for British and World history as well as demonstrating understanding of individual events.

The courses we follow:

At Key Stage 3...
In Years 7, 8 and 9, students find out about the history of their community, Britain, Europe and The World. They develop a chronological overview that enables them to make connections within and across different periods and societies. They investigate Britain’s relationships with the wider world, and relate past events to the present day.

British History: The key themes covered are:
- The development of political power from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, the changing relationship between the crown and parliament and the development of democracy.
- The impact through time of the movement and settlement of diverse peoples to, from and within the British Isles
- The way in which the lives, beliefs, ideas and attitudes of people in Britain have changed over time and the factors – such as technology, economic development, war, religion and culture – that have driven these changes in the development of trade, colonisation, industrialisation and technology, the British Empire and its impact on different people in Britain and overseas, pre-colonial civilisations, the nature and effects of the slave trade.

European and World History key themes covered are: - The changing nature of conflict and cooperation between countries and peoples and its lasting impact on national, ethnic, racial, cultural or religious issues, including the nature and impact of the two world wars and the Holocaust, and the role of European and international institutions in resolving conflicts.
- The way in which the lives, beliefs, ideas and attitudes of people in Britain have changed over time. The development of trade, colonisation, industrialisation and technology, the British Empire. The impact of significant political, social, cultural, religious, technological and/or economic developments and events on past European and world societies:

Key Stage 3 course content:

- Local History Unit: Streetly and Sutton Coldfield

At Key Stage 4-;
GCSE History is a stimulating and involving course which gives students a detailed insight into the key events of the Twentieth Century. Skills such as analysis, detection of bias, inference and use of knowledge are developed, along with understanding of concepts such as propaganda, Fascism, Communism and Capitalism.
Students  study -;
International Relations in the 20th century   ( Written Paper 1 hour 45 mins-37.5% total marks)
A depth study on Germany 1919-45 and the War in Vietnam (Written Paper 1 hour 45 mins-37.5% total marks)

An Historical Enquiry which focuses on ‘The British People in War’-this is a controlled assessment (coursework) which is worth 25% of the total marks


At Key Stage 5-;

The Edexcel GCE course is divided into four units covering aspects of British, European and World History. Units 1and 2 are AS level. Units 3 and 4 are A2 level. Assessment is via a combination of examinations (3 units) and Coursework (one unit)

Unit 1: The expansion and Challenge of Nationalism: The Collapse of the Liberal State and the Triumph of Fascism in Italy 1896-1943 and Germany-From Second Reich to Third Reich

Unit 2: Britain:Poverty, Public Health and the growth of Government in Britain 1830-75

Unit 3: The United States 1917-54:Boom,Bust and Recovery

Unit 4: Protest, Challenge and Reform in Britain 1880-1992:  (coursework unit)
