What can a student expect when using ICT at The Streetly Academy?

  • Interesting, relevant, well prepared courses for all Key Stages.
  • All lessons are prepared and are available to learners at all times using the Frog VLE.
  • Individual support and extensive opportunities for self-study at lunchtime and extra-curricular computer clubs.
  • Finally, a helpful, enthusiastic and committed staff!

During ICT lessons, students will experience the following aspects of ICT:

Year 7:

  • E-Safety – personal data, cyberbullying, physical risks and data protection.
  • Multimedia Quiz – based on e-safety work.
  • Collaborative newsletter – group work, collaboration, DTP, copyright issues.
  • Healthy Eating survey – creating and using data collection systems, analysing data, testing a hypothesis.
  • Computer control – introduction to loops, variables and sub-routines.

 

Year 8

  • Weather Information Systems – using automatic data collection systems, formatting to meet audience needs.
  • Web Site Publishing – web site design, copyright issues.
  • Sports Event Planning - a combined project where students consolidate skills and knowledge gained to use organise an event.
  • Control (Funfair Ride) – building and testing a more complex program in sections.

 

Year 9

In Year 9 we start Key Stage 4.  Students study OCR Nationals in ICT. We begin with:

  • OCR Nationals Unit 23 – creating, editing and testing a video
  • OCR Nationals Unit 21 – designing and creating a set of interactive graphics for a website.
  • Functional Skills – we are currently planning to give Y9 students access to the new Functional ICT qualification.

Key Stage 4

All students follow an OCR Nationals Award short course. This comprises of:

  • Unit 1 – ICT Skills for Business
  • Unit 23 – Video Editing (students can re-use and develop Y9 work)

Students can opt for OCR Nationals Award, worth 2 GCSE equivalents at A* to C grade. The following additional units are studied:

  • Unit 2 – Website Design
  • Unit 4 – Multimedia Application Design
  • Unit 21 – Web graphics (students can re-use and develop Y9 work)
  • Unit 22 – Sound Editing

Key Stage 5

Students can study the OCR Nationals Level 3 Certificate qualification, worth the direct equivalent to one “A” Level.  They follow four mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 – Digital Business Communication
  • Unit 2 – Collaborative Working
  • Unit 3 –  Problem Solving
  • Unit 4 – Creating a Digital Showcase

In addition, they study two extra units from a range of specialist themes, to complete their qualification.  All units carry equal weighting.

Extra Curricular ICT

All students have access to an ICT club held every lunchtime and most afternoons and the end of the day.  In the club, they can complete work, research using the web and build their skills.  Advice and help is always on hand.
